letters

candleWaiting for a letter was always an exciting thing. It really isn’t long ago that there were no computers and therefore no emails for instant communication.  The first film I saw with a computer in had it housed in a huge bunker style room full of whirring spools and wheels. Now of course the amount of power generated by this roomful is probably exceeded by the laptop!

I was watching Elizabeth – The Golden Age. Letters sent by Mary Queen of Scots to her allies were intercepted. She in turn was beheaded and war with Spain leading to the Spanish Armada was the outcome. Everything turned so slowly. Waiting for letters, particularly romantic ones, seems to have been relegated to Jane Austin stories.

But I used to get them. When I first started going out with Annie it was more a relationship through letter. We would write several times a week. The ones I received often had little watercolour paintings in them. Of course they had no intrinsic value in and of themselves but to me they were priceless and I would read them and reread them. It wasn’t the letter so much as the person behind the letter who was expressing her love that was getting my attention!.

God is love and He has expressed His love throughout creation. Although we are destroying our planet there is still much to take the breath away. Not only that but He has expressed Himself through His Son Jesus and as He dies on a cross for all of us God’s love for us is perfectly demonstrated. But we would know nothing of it unless it was recorded, written down and made available to us – hence the Bible is more than just a collection of books and stories but a love letter with the great lover Himself, God, behind every page.

The scripture is the foundation, the plumb line if you like, for our lives. When we read it we are looking for the God who is love, expressed through Jesus, in every page. One of humankind’s greatest needs is to be loved and to know we are loved by God himself as told through the pages of the Bible is just fantastic!
