miracle 3

snookerWe all love those kind of mistaikes (woops mistakes) that we hear or see from time to time. Some have become quite famous. For example, the one from the snooker when the commentator said, “For those watching in black and white, the blue is behind the red”! We enjoy political gaffs. George Bush said, “It isn’t pollution that’s harming the environment. It is the impurities in our air and water that are doing it.”

We enjoy church ones – Tonight’s sermon, ‘What is the nature of hell?’ Come early and listen to the choir practice!
Last Sunday as you read the notices I wonder if you spotted the deliberate mistake. When John wrote his gospel he did it around seven miracles and seven sayings of Jesus. John was really into the number seven. However last week I did miracle no. 3 – not 2!

So what of miracle no. 2? Again, it was done quietly and privately. In John   ch 4 v46-47 we read that - once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. Maybe the noble had heard all about the wine through the talk and gossip in the town. It was enough for him to approach Jesus. But Jesus never got to lay hands on his boy. Despite the pleading of the nobleman Jesus just speaks the healing word, “Go, your son will live.” It was enough and when the nobleman reached home he discovered his son was healed.
Sometimes we hear God speak to us. Yes, I know, when someone claims that God has spoken to them we tend to think them somewhat cracked in the head – but it is true, he does speak and his words are healing and life to us. But so often on our way we forget, or doubt that Jesus has spoken into our lives. That is why we need to hear of his love, forgiveness, mercy and healing so often. He speaks hope, healing and new life into our relationships, marriages, friendships, family and work commitments. Let us stop to listen and let us go on our way believing his promises!
