new start
Whilst on holiday last year – a brilliant time with lots of hot sunshine – we had one day when all it did was rain, rain, rain. The thunder and lightening began at around 4am and continued overhead for the next six hours. We got up out of bed early to watch the storm from the veranda but gave up after an hour’s spectacle to go back to bed. When the rain eventually ceased at around three in the afternoon there was an amazing calm. Everything had been washed clean. The dust and loose dirt on the dry and dusty island had been washed away and everything glistened and shone in the sunlight.
We like new things; the smell of a new born baby, the smoothness of new clothes and the beauty of fresh cut flowers in Spring, Don’t get me wrong – I love a bargain and I think charity shops are brilliant - but oh the joy of the aroma of the new coffee jar: new things!
We like to make new beginnings, turning over a new leaf, making a fresh start. At the beginning of the year many make New Year resolutions. However from my experience of such things - and of course you may be very different - I don’t seem to have it in me to get very far. I find I need the help from another, the One that really can make a difference, Jesus. It says in 2 Corinthians Ch 5 v17 ………. if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! Being ‘in Christ’ is not just believing in Him but totally trusting Him for everything. If I want to go by train to London I have to go to the station and actually get on board. Standing on the platform believing in the train’s destination does no good whatsoever!
When we do trust Him, when we do follow Him, He will one day bring us to His glorious destination where He will wipe every tear from our eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things will have passed away. In Revelation Ch 21 v5 it then says, ‘He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."‘ Let us trust in Jesus for new starts and fresh beginnings.
