The Scarlet Pimpernelseeking 2

We seek him here, we seek him there,
Those Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he in heaven? - Is he in hell?
That damned, elusive Pimpernel?
I hope that I have not, in one quote, labelled myself as a user of bad language and also a racist, ‘cos I’m not! So wrote Baroness Emmuska Orczy in her classic play ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’. Soon after the play opened, to not great reviews, the last part was rewritten and it became hugely popular. The novel of the same name was released soon after in 1905. It was all about an English gent rescuing the nobility from the French Revolution and ‘Madame Guillotine’  - but could the French find him as he underwent his deeds of daring do … of course not! in her classic play ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’. We love those mysterious heroes like The Scarlet Pimpernel or Robin Hood, Zorro or even Batman. Recently we were encouraged to hire The ‘A’ Team – if we could find them! We are, however, encouraged to seek after God who seems so mysterious, distant and remote to many, so we can actually find Him and know Him. He wants us to know Him intimately as a friend and close companion as well as Saviour and Lord.
In Isaiah ch55 v6 it says, Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.
How do we know that the Lord is near and how do we seek for Him? I think we need to be a bit like Bartimaeus in Mark ch 10. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you." Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see." "Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

He got a whiff of the fact that God was around the place and so shouted out with all his might and wouldn’t be put off. Maybe you and I are just not as persistent with our searching and seeking for Him as perhaps we could be. Maybe you don’t know if God is there for you, but it might just be worth taking the risk and calling out to him and then persisting even if only the darkness seems to shout back. Reach out a hand to Him today – He might just grab hold, He promises to do so.
